Skewness and Kurtosis in Large-scale Cosmic Fields

چکیده

In this paper, I present the calculation of the third and fourth moments of both the distribution function of the large–scale density and the large–scale divergence of the velocity field, θ. These calculations are made by the mean of perturbative calculations assuming Gaussian initial conditions and are expected to be valid in the linear or quasi linear regime. The moments are derived for a top–hat window function and for any cosmological parameters Ω and Λ. It turns out that the dependence with Λ is always very weak whereas the moments of the distribution function of the divergence are strongly dependent on Ω. A method to measure Ω using the skewness of this field has already been presented by Bernardeau et al. (1993). I show here that the simultaneous measurement of the skewness and the kurtosis allows to test the validity of the gravitational instability scenario hypothesis. Indeed there is a combination of the first three moments of θ that is almost independent of the cosmological parameters Ω and Λ, θ 4 − 3 θ 2 2 θ 2 θ 3 2 ≈ 1.5, (the value quoted is valid when the index of the power spectrum at the filtering scale is close to-1) so that any cosmic velocity field created by gravitational instabilities should verify such a property. Weak lensing of the CMB: Cumulants of the probability distribution function

We discuss the real-space moments of temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! due to weak gravitational lensing by intervening large-scale structure. We show that if the probability distribution function of primordial temperature anisotropies is Gaussian, then it remains unchanged after gravitational lensing. With finite resolution, however, nonzero higher-order cumulan...

The Kurtosis of the Cosmic Shear Field

We study the fourth-order moment of the cosmic shear field using the dark matter halo approach to describe the nonlinear gravitational evolution of structure in the universe. Since the third-order moment of the shear field vanishes because of symmetry, non-Gaussian signatures in its one-point statistics emerge at the fourth-order level. We argue that the shear kurtosis parameter Sγ,4 ≡ 〈γ i 〉c/...

Statistics of Weak Lensing by Large-scale Structure

We describe an efficient algorithm for calculating the statistics of weak lensing by large-scale structure based on a tiled set of independent particle-mesh N-body simulations which telescope in resolution along the line of sight. This efficiency allows us to predict not only the mean properties of lensing observables such as the power spectrum, skewness and kurtosis of the convergence, but als...

Density-Based Skewness and Kurtosis Functions

New, functional, concepts of skewness and kurtosis are introduced for large classes of continuous univariate distributions. They are the first skewness and kurtosis measures to be defined directly in terms of the probability density function and its derivative, and are directly interpretable in terms of them. Unimodality of the density is a basic prerequisite. The mode defines the centre of suc...

Variance of the Higher - Order Cumulants of Cosmic Density and Velocity Fields

If primordial fluctuation is Gaussian distributed, higher-order cumulants of the cosmic fields reflect nonlinear mode coupling and provide useful information of gravitational instability picture of structure formation. We show that their expected deviation (sample variance) from the universal values is nonvanishing even in linear theory in the case where observed volume is finite. As a result, ...
